    Character Inspiration
    SuperficialPersonality
CEO/Head Bitch in ChargeEye color: green, the colour of money and greed Hair color and style: ponytails to showcase her immaturity and young age. Hair rollers, messy hair, etc. Clothing: short skirts or tight pants and business casual tops, lace. Think slutty office wear. Low cut tops, sparkles, and patterns are also favoured, with many outfit changes to be seen!!Character Props: pregnancy belly (made from a beanbag, hair bonnet, tank top, and a marble for the outie belly button), alcoholic drinks (wine, beer, vodka), and a cigarette or vape in hand at all times. Gum, trash, empty cans, Occupation: ceo of the unnamed office
    Played by: Norah
Admirable personality traits: the CEO is very strong-willed and cultivates her team by giving birth to her entire workforce. Super nice to the local cashier at the lcbo. Negative personality traits: the CEO is a pregnant teenager who runs the whole company in complete chaos. The CEO is short-tempered, arrogant, immature, brash, rude, bossy, and does not care for her children/horrible mother. Does not run her company ethically, legally, or morally.  Bad habits or vices: alcoholic and nicotine addict, also takes massive amounts of random pills Characterโ€™s goals: managing the most successful company in the world while doing basically nothingMotivations: money, power, the opportunity to abuse employees
Why are they important to include? What is their role in the episode?
The CEO is important for moving the plot forward as she gives the employees meaningless directions and tasks throughout the episode. The bosses’ unlikable characteristics and lack of reasoning cause her to be a type of antagonist or antihero. The CEO embodies characteristics socially seen as unladylike or improper for women/girls to do, such as being promiscuous, rude, brash, and messy. Breaking the mold of a white old man with a stick up his ass being in charge, the CEO is an impulsive, unstable, pregnant 19-year-old with a serious drinking problem. The role of the CEO is to make sure her employees/children keep earning her money, birth the employees, and plan the Christmas party. The CEO is a controversial girl boss, but she keeps the (morally corrupt) office running.

    Oracle Card

    “The Sign Seeker”

This card represents symbolism in observation. The universe is speaking to you in subtle ways; look to the world around you for symbolic messages and listen to your intuition to decipher its hidden meaningโ€”you might just find an answer to your question.

Meaning: When I was a child, I developed a panic disorder that highly complicated my day-to-day activities, especially so when I was in school. In order to ease my anxiety, I tried elaborating different techniques, and one of these became trying to find “signs” in the mundanity of day-to-day which would signify that I would be alright. Throughout my high school years, when my stress levels were especially severe, I carried a journal in which I wrote down every sign I encountered: finding a quarter on the sidewalk, finding a flower that looked like a four-leaf clover, seeing the clock sitting on “angel numbers” such as 4:44, or seeing luck-imbued birds, like magpies, on my way to class. Today, I have accepted and adapted to my condition. Nevertheless, I wanted to create the oracle card that I would have wanted to see when I was younger. To do this, I have inserted some of the common signs I would indicate in my journal, as well as the original writings on them, onto the card. It is my way of symbolically telling my past self that everything will be alright, no matter what.

    Character

    Harold

Harold is a puppet who acts as the mascot for the company’s training and orientation videos. Dull and rugged, it is evident that he has occupied this position for a long time, acting as a sort of pull-out-the-basement-when-we-need-him character; this can most widely be seen from his visual adherence to typical 70s puppets seen on cable TV. As a result of his long-standing employment, he has been drained of much of his personality. In such, he represents the company’s unwavering commitment at adhering to guidelines, regardless of how much this might dampen the spirits of employees. His serious personality stands in stark contrast with his colleagues’ often absurd behaviour, thereby exposing his own ridiculousness and that of the office environment by illustrating how rigidity can transform individuals into a conformist group devoid of personality.

Harold is inspired by the common trope of employing puppets as moral commentators on cable television. In particular, they are frequently utilized for their ability to represent the “everyman,” serving as a means of softening complex and challenging subjects. This enables them to be used as critique without any substantial consequences. Leveraging this idea, I wanted to develop a character that was aware of their own ability to present anything as “acceptable,” while also being evidently flawed, actually revealing the underlying systematic problems of the institution.

Haroldโ€™s function in the television episode is to serve as a stabilizing force of “normality;” his efforts to ensure that his coworkers comply with office rules and regulations mirror the contemporary reality in any workplace, where employees are often compelled to suppress their authentic selves in favour of rigid conformity. By serving as a force that moderates the comedic tone of the episode, while simultaneously exposing the harsh and self-destructive expectations prevalent in the workplace, his presence creates a satirical commentary. He is able to show the ridiculous nature by which employees are frequently required to detach themselves from their individuality to fit into a standardized, monotonous, and identity-deficient environment where everyone is a simple number.

I found Loftโ€™s choice to recall the story of Coyote gifting fire to humans so fascinating. On first read, it immediately reminded me of the classical myth of Prometheus stealing fire from Zeus to give back to the humans, especially with its focus on the trickster character (Coyote/Prometheus), the hiding of fire (in wood/in fennel stalk), and the way it provides origins for other features of the world (animal characteristics/women). But reading deeper, Loftโ€™s comparison of the gift of fire to modern technology in relation to art was something that stuck with me. The fire, like art, was gatekept. Loft mentions painting and sculpture as inaccessible forms of art (expensive, time consuming, and generally sticking to certain conventions based in European ideals for much of its history) and technology as accessible and present. I especially loved how he positions art made using media and electronic tech as โ€œ[forgoing] the territorialized domains of cultural and artistic canons.โ€ If the fire under the careful watch of the sisters represents the mediums tied to European artistic canon, then the fire brought to the humans is media arts, art liberated from that careful watch, and free to be honed for so much more.

(p.s. Iโ€™m really hoping that made sense as I am sick and sick brain loves to jumble thoughts around like clothes in a washing machine!)

    Oracle Card:

It’s time to repair: The design of my oracle card features an optical illusion and an image of the rabies virus under a microscope with the text “it’s time to repair”. The design elements in this card reference a recent study in which mice were infected with an engineered rabies virus, the mice were then given a dose of psilocybin, the active compound in “magic mushrooms”. The rabies virus was used as a tracing tool to monitor how psilocybin rewires and strengthens the brains connections. The method in which this study was executed was designed to better understand neural pathways in the brain. If you were to pull this card in an oracle deck, I believe it should encourage you to reflect on what you need to repair in your own life and how can you achieve said reparation- note this does NOT mean you should try mushrooms to repair things in your life. This card simply suggests reparation in what way you see fit.

What to put in the book: Reparation. This card serves to reflect on what you need to repair in your own life and how you can achieve said reparation. This card is not meant to predict a path for you but to serve as a guide for self-reflection.

    The Ancient Wisdom Card

The organic matter and outdoor elements of this card are meant to ground you. Remember the natural world is divine and we are all connected. Seeking solace in nature may lead you to the answers or inspirations you are searching for.

As inhabitants of Turtle Island we owe the land our respect and admiration. Refocus some of your attention toward native species like the Common Snapping Turtle. The Turtle provides us with everything and asks for nothing in return. Acknowledging the lives of other species can put our realities into perspective. The card is layered and reveals an ecosystem of unknown depth; allow the universe to work it’s magic whether you can fully comprehend its complexities or not.

    Oracle Card

    The Diviner

Represents Curiosity, Understanding, Learning and Obsession

This card is meant to embody the experience of desiring and engaging learning. Its the voice in your head that wants to absorb as much information about a topic that it can, sometimes to your own detriment. It revels in understanding the unknowns of the world, and engages with both the physical and mental aspects of learning.

a positive reading is that it represents a new experience or understanding that will empower you moving forward. or a passion for something born of genuine interest.

A negative reading is that it represents an unhealthy obsession, an attempt to understand something to the detriment of yourself or your surroundings.

This card making process is not completely alien to me oddly enough, as in my last experimental studio class I made a miniature tarot deck. This card was an opportunity to expand on that initial concept further. The original cards I made were all based on various aspects of my thoughts, specifically the different perspectives and inner monologues I think of in my day to day activities. The Deck served as a way to represent the totality of a mind as various individual components coming together to create a cohesive whole.

This card represents curiosity. You open all of your senses to explore, try new things, and better understand the world around you. You are growing, in a state of becoming…

Coral was born Purple Staghorn Coral to two hipster hermaphrodite parents. They spent their childhood growing up in their home in the warm, shallow ocean waters of the Caribbean. Coral was always friendly and vivacious as a child, often inviting the neighbour fish to frolic in their yard.

When Coral was an adolescent, divers became especially attracted to their beauty and vibrant personality.  The diversโ€™ Instagram posts became viral, making Coral an overnight celebrity. Shortly after, a famous TV channel quickly signed up them up to host Coralโ€™s School for Fish.  This childrenโ€™s program is designed to draw attention to the relationship between disappearing ocean species and climate change.

Coral has always been a strong advocate for various aquatic species in decline. When asked why this is important to them, Coral revealed how many of their own relatives have recently passed away due to white band and white plague diseases. Coral, themself, lives in constant anxiety that they too might contract this deadly disease. Coral reflected: โ€œWe all do what we can with the little time that we might have.โ€

I have been working on an animation, Chats with Coral, for our TV show. Here is the finished audio:
